At San Diego Coastkeeper, we believe that everyday choices we make, both as individuals and as an organization, can cumulatively have a significant impact on our environment. Therefore, we continue striving to make our Ocean Gala as sustainable as possible. We seek to build relationships with eco-conscience companies and vendors to help lighten our ecological footprint as we work to achieve our mission of clean, safe and healthy waterways for all San Diegans. Some ways in which we made the 2009 Ocean Gala a green event included:
Partners

ONEHOPE Wine donates 50% of its profits to partner charities that benefit a variety of causes, including protecting the planet. ONEHOPE has pledged to plant one tree for every bottle of Sauvignon Blanc sold to help forests filter water, remove air pollution, sequester carbon, and provide homes for wildlife. Everyone must do what they can if we are going to tackle global warming and for our part. Who knows, one day you can enjoy a glass of that Sauvignon Blanc under the shade of a tree you helped plant.
Promotional Materials The Ocean Gala Save the Date postcards and invitations have been printed using soy-based inks on 100% recycled paper with 100% post consumer recycled paper content by Rush Press, a FSC and Rainforest Alliance certified printer. 850 pounds of paper made with 100% post consumer recycled fiber saves:
5,000 pounds of Wood A total of 11 trees that supply enough oxygen for 6 people annually. 5,000 gallons of Water Enough to take 293 eight minute showers. 4mln BTUs Energy Enough energy to power an average American household for 14 days. 1000 lbs Emissions Carbon sequestered by 12 tree seedlings grown for 10 years. 300 lbs Solid Waste Trash thrown away by 60 people in a single day.
Going Green Live Auction For the second straight year, the Ocean Gala will feature its signature “Going Green” Live Auction comprised of eco-friendly items and outdoor experiences, such as the Green Your Home, Green Gourmet and eco-tourism packages.
Thank You Gift Native and drought tolerant seedballs are encased with 3 measures of compost and 5 measures of red clay and formed into small balls. Scatter seedballs and water once a week or as needed. This technique was introduced by plant pathologist and natural farmer Masanobu Fukuoka. It is fitting for San Diego as it is useful for seeding thin and compacted soils. We would like to thank Groundwork San Diego, Chollas Creek students and volunteers for creating the seedballs for our guests.
Sustainable and eco-friendly items were tagged with a gold leaf at the Gala. |
